My mom and I are getting ready to have a garage sale next week. Oh, the agony of it all! Finding the stuff you want to sell, packing it up so it doesn't break, dragging it up or down the stairs, setting up tables, marking prices on everything. We are exhausted. I hope we don't do all this work and only make $60! I will let you know how it went after it is over next week.

How long has it been since you went on a hay ride? I went on one yesterday with my daughter, and we had such a nice time. I had forgotten how fun they are! Here's a pic of our view, we were in the front of the wagon. Wish it had been a horse-drawn hay ride, but it was still fun!

Our bird house was occupied this year by a chickadee family. They had 2 babies, and yesterday they fled the nest! Only problem was, the littlest of the two wasn't quite ready yet. He tried to fly, but just kept flopping to the ground. I finally got him to hop on my finger and returned him to his home. Today he has gone off to start his new life.

Nikon Coolpix L100 Digital Camera Review

For Christmas, I received the Nikon L100 digital camera as a gift. I've been wanting a digital camera that has some zoom to it, because I like to take pictures of the wildlife by me, and as you know, you can't get very close to wildlife without scaring them off.

The camera has 15x Optical Zoom, 10 megapixels and Vibration Reduction. The cost is around $199.

My results have been mixed. When using the zoom, it is harder to get a clear picture. It has auto focus, so you can't focus the camera yourself. You press the button halfway down to focus, then continue pressing the rest of the way to take the picture. Sometimes the camera will focus on something else in the picture, like a tree or leaf, when you want it to focus on a bird or deer. You have to keep playing with the zoom and the focus to finally get a good shot. It is easier to get a good shot with a tripod, but that isn't always possible when you are taking pictures of animals and birds.

I think for the price, this camera is worth it. You can't find another camera with this much zoom for that price. I am having a lot of fun with it, and am happy with a lot of my pictures.

I had one of those days that are few and far between. I actually had energy ALL day long! So I got a lot done. Did some laundry, vacuumed, washed dishes, and I cooked and cooked. Made homemade pepper-cheese bread, my Grandma's cabbage & noodles, cooked up a pound of bacon, and made some creamy potato soup. So hopefully I won't have to cook for a few days. I think it's because Spring is around the corner, and that makes me feel great. The sun shined all day today, even though it was only 20 out, and I sat in it on the couch and read my book. Love that!

Chickadees!

I love birds. Actually, I love all of nature, except for spiders. I know spiders have their uses, but they just creep me out! My family went to a local park on Sunday, a place where they have 'trained' the birds to land on your hand and take sunflower seeds from you. It was cold and raining, but it was worth it. The birds ignored us at first, choosing to land on the bird feeders to get their dinner, but as long as you stand perfectly still, they eventually start to land on your hand. My daughter and I were thrilled to watch a black-capped chickadee land on our hands. They aren't even in a hurry, not scared at all. They land on your hand, look around, look up into your face, and then cram 2 seeds in their beaks before taking off to eat them. I think we each had 4 birds land on our hands before the winter cold crept into our bones and we gave up. And of course, my camera batteries died as soon as I turned it on to take pics of it all! It was a 45 minute drive, so we have decided to go back in the Spring, when we won't freeze, and this time I will bring extra batteries.

Today my husband and I went on a date! We went to see the new Sandra Bullock movie, which was really good, and then out to eat Italian style. I had stuffed cannelloni, which I just had to use spellcheck to spell. It was delicious!

Went to a couple craft shows in my area that were fun. My mom bought me a wren bird house for Christmas that is perfect, and hopefully a female wren will find it acceptable once a male shows it to her! Almost done shopping, just a few more items to pick up. Haven't decided if I'm going out on Black Friday, will have to see the ads before I decide.

Casinos in Ohio

The Casino bill passed yesterday, so Ohio will finally have gambling. I'm glad, because they will be building one only 20 minutes from me. Right now the closest is 2 1/2 hrs. away, in WV. I only go once or twice a year, but it's a fun thing to do when bored.

A review of Watership Down (1976)

When I was a teenager, my father brought home a book and told me I should read it. This was only the second time my father ever recommended a book to me (the first being Jonathan Livingston Seagull), as he was into books that were pretty deep for a child. The book was Watership Down, by Richard Adams. He said it was the best book he had read in quite some time. I remember that it was pretty thick, over 400 pages, and I thought I would never finish it. I read books all the time, but I was only 13, and it would be the longest book I ever read up to then.

I asked him what it was about, and he hesitated. Then he laughed and said, "Rabbits." I must have looked pretty skeptical, because he said, "Just read it. You will be glad you did."

So I read it. And it became my favorite book of all time. Maybe it was my age, but I've heard other adults say they loved it as much as my father did.

The story is about a warren of rabbits that have to find a new home when land developers dig up their home. The story takes place through the eyes of the rabbits, so they talk, and have some words that we don't use (there is a very small dictionary at the back of the book) in their language, that make the book all the more enjoyable. It is written well, and you will have your favorite rabbits, like the runt Fiver.

Read the review on Amazon.com, and pick it up there or at your library. I think you will enjoy it! I am in my 40's now, and I've read it about 5 times. Oh, and one more thing. Please don't watch the animated movie they made a few years after the book was released. It is really horrible in my opinion. Totally ruins the book.

A Treasure Hunt.

I sent my daughter on a treasure hunt to find her graduation present. She had a blast! I gave her the first clue, and it led her to the next one, but she had to figure it out first. She ended up taking 2 days to get it done. She had to drive to a lot of different places. The funniest one was the clue that told her to go the library and she had to find a certain book. Inside, she had to find a page that gave her a clue to which computer in the library the next clue was taped underneath. There are about 20 computers. So of course the computer she needs has a girl sitting in front of it. My daughter walks right up to her, while I hid behind some books and tried not to laugh, and tells her that she's on a treasure hunt and there is supposed to be a clue under her computer terminal. The girl gave her a look like she was nuts, but she felt underneath and found the piece of paper I had taped there. She said, "There is!" like she was quite surprised to find out that my daughter wasn't nuts after all. She handed it over and off we went, laughing. I would never have had the nerve to walk up to her like that.

Graduation day

My daughter graduated from college on Mother's Day! It was a gorgeous day, and the ceremony was outside. I only cried at the beginning, which was good. I didn't want to embarrass myself too much! It was the best Mother's Day ever. I am so very proud of her. I can't even express how amazed I am by what she has accomplished so far.

New bird sighting!

I love birds, I feed them all winter and enjoy watching them. Today in the park I saw a Baltimore Oriole! I've never seen one before, in all the 21 years I've lived in this house. They are so pretty. I must have seen a male, because he was such a bright orange, with a black head. And he was singing away, a very nice voice. I hope I see him again sometime!

Don't you just love it when it finally warms up, and the birds are singing? The leaves are opening up slowly on the trees here, and daffodils and hyacinths are popping up everywhere. My cherry tree bloomed yesterday, it smells wonderful. All of this puts me in such a good mood. My sweet hubby painted my computer room last week, and we will get new carpet in there too. We had some water damage in that room over the winter from an ice dam on the roof. I don't even mind that my printer broke and I had to buy a new one. Installed it today, and I love it! And one of the toilets broke, too, so had to spend more money to buy a new one. Luckily my husband knows how to put them in, so we saved on the installation fee. Funny how in the winter, these added expenses would get me down, but since it is Spring, I don't mind so much! Luckily we got some money back from the tax man. Hopefully nothing else will happen!

Went to Kmart early this morning, as they had double coupons again, which they haven't had in a while now. My total was $47 and after coupons I gave them $16. Not bad! Kmart doesn't seem to carry as many brands as the other grocery stores near me, so a lot of the best coupons I had couldn't be used there. Oh well, I will take what good deals I can find. They actually have triple coupons in some stores across the country this week, but the closest to me is over 2 hours away. Maybe someday!

Not a good use for spaghetti

Yesterday I had one of those mornings where I should've stayed in bed. First I got some cereal, poured on the milk, and then the phone rang. I had to answer it because my parents are on vacation, and I always worry about them when they are away. It was my Mom, and she talked my ear off for 20 minutes, happily chattering away about all the fun they were having. Afterwards, my cereal was too soggy to eat. I tried, because I really hate wasting food (which comes from being so frugal), but it was just gross.

Consequently, I was hungry for lunch at 10am. So I made a plate of spaghetti, put in a movie to watch, and proceeded to drop the whole plate upside down on my cream colored carpet in the living room. I still don't know how it happened! Panicked, I ran for towels and rags and tried hot water and the stains would not come out. And let me tell you, this spaghetti traveled far and wide. Then I remembered my Mom telling me years ago, that if I ever got a stain in the carpet that wouldn't come out, to try bathroom cleaner. I ran upstairs and grabbed the Scrubbing Bubbles. After a half hour of spraying and rubbing, I don't have a single stain on the carpet!

Then the alarm on my stove went off, and I remember the bread dough that I made that morning and set in the stove to rise. So I went in, punched it down, replaced the towel over top and placed it back in the now cold oven. I turned the oven on again, on what I thought was 170 degrees for a couple minutes, but I got distracted when my daughter woke up and of course, I had to tell her about the carpet mishap. So suddenly the stove beeps, which means it got up to the temperature that I set it at. I think "Crap, I forgot to turn the oven back off." I run in the kitchen and the oven is set at 350! eek. The dough was in there for 5 minutes, and the towel was smoking, but at least it wasn't on fire. The dough had already risen to double it's size. I'm thinking this can't be good, it was supposed to take an hour to rise. So I go ahead and bake it anyway. Well, it turned out to be the heaviest loaf of bread ever. Each slice weighed tons! I ended up feeding it to the birds the next day, and even they wouldn't eat it. Now you can see why I should've stayed in bed!

Yesterday we were pleased to accept an invitation to a gala at my esteemed parent's countryside manor. It was just a small party of seven and twenty guests. We took great pleasure in playing cards, although it was rather crass of some of the invitees to actually play for money! The grand winner was my lovely niece's young beau. He is a charming young man, with wonderful prospects, as he is attending university.

We were served a variety of unusual foodstuffs, buffet style. Apparently the servants had the day off, as we each had to serve ourselves. I really must speak to my Mother about that!

Losing Brain Cells

I had an interesting conversation with my neighbor. She had her first baby in October, and she said that since the baby was born, she feels like she lost half of her brain cells. She wanted to know if I felt that way after my daughter was born. I was actually pleased to hear this; not that I wanted her to feel that way, but I felt the same way, and it was good to see that it wasn't only me! I told her the bad news: I still feel that way some days, and my daughter is graduating from college this year! But it's all good, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Drip, Drip, Drip

I am sitting here, listening to "drip, drip, drip" as I type this out. Our house has 2 windows upstairs that sort of stick out, if you know what I mean? And lots of ice on the roof right now that is hanging down from the gutters past the windows. Well, the ice must've backed up under the roof or something, because the dripping is in between the walls next to the window. And the floor is getting wet. I can't put a bucket anywhere to catch the water (since it is dripping in between the walls), and it's driving me nuts! A roofer won't be able to do anything in this weather, so will have to wait til Spring to have something done. Unless this gets worse, then I will have to call someone. This happened about 5 years ago, too, but it was during a bad ice storm and I hoped it was just a fluke.

Had a successful shopping trip today. First I went to Kmart, they are having double coupon days, up to $1. I spent $49 and gave them $9 after coupons! Got 8 boxes of cereal, 4 cans of Pringles, 2 Glade candles, 2 Luminaire candles. I will give the candles to my daughter for part of her birthday present in a couple weeks.

Next I went to Walgreens, spent $10 and paid them $1. Got 3 pints of Ben & Jerry's ice cream and a VHS blank tape that my daughter needed.

Last stop was Giant Eagle. Spent $55 and paid them $24. Got assorted groceries. I'm on a shopping high now! Yeah, I know....I'm such a nerd.

Funny story that happened to me. I was out shopping with my Mom and we decided to get Burger King for lunch. Went thru the drive-thru and ordered Whopper Jrs. and onion rings. Pull up to the first window to pay, hand her $10 (almost), and the wind blew it away! Now, as I am a very frugal person, I wasn't going to let it go that easily. I put the car in park, jump out and don't see it anywhere. The girl at the window just stared at me and pointed behind the building. So off I ran, around the corner, and there was my Mom's $10, lying on the ground right below the door of a SUV that had a man in it giving his order. He gave me that look that you give strange people, you know the one (What is that woman about to do and should I roll my window up?!), as I rushed up to his vehicle and leaned down and grabbed the $10 off the ground before it could blow away again. I stood up, showed the man and told him to watch out for the wind. He relaxed then, and laughed. I ran back to my car, paid the girl, and proceeded to pass up the second window, because I was so flustered. My Mom yelled "Stop!"... and I remember I didn't get our food. So I had to back up the car to the second window, where the girl (a different one) stared at me with her eyebrows up and handed me my food. LOL, oh well, I'm sure they've seen it all!

Went to Kmart this morning, for their double coupon days. Got $86 worth of items for $39! It didn't seem like I had very much in my cart, though, for it to add up to that much. I am having trouble getting used to the higher prices, I guess. Still thinking of the days when I got a whole cartfull of stuff for $39.

We went to Lonestar Steakhouse today, even though my birthday is on Friday, because my hubby works Friday. It was so delicious! I got Filet Minon Tips over Texas Rice, with Grilled Veggies and Chicken Pot Pie Soup on the side. And it was free with my birthday $15 they emailed me! We only had to pay for hubby's dinner. The waitress came with the bill, and she surprised me with a free Brownie Sundae, which, luckily for my husband, I let him share! I couldn't believe all the free food, just for my birthday!
